Unprecedented Gift Endows New Chair of Asian Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the receipt of a monumental, transformative $20 million gift from a highly respected philanthropic family. This unprecedented donation will be used to permanently endow the curatorial position of the Chair of the Department of Asian Art, ensuring long-term financial stability and strategic growth for one of the museum's largest and most complex departments.

Beyond securing the leadership position, a significant portion of the endowment will establish a dedicated, robust acquisition fund. This fund is explicitly earmarked for the purchase of contemporary works by living Asian artists. This strategic directive aligns perfectly with the museum's broader initiative to bridge the gap between historical antiquities and the vibrant, evolving narratives of the modern global art world.

The generous donors, who have been steadfast supporters of The Met for over three decades, expressed their profound belief in the power of Asian art to foster cross-cultural understanding. Their gift is intended to elevate the global visibility of Asia's incredibly rich, diverse, and interconnected artistic heritage, from ancient ceramics to cutting-edge multimedia installations.

The newly endowed Chair will have expanded resources to initiate groundbreaking international collaborations. Plans are already underway to utilize the funds to support ambitious, multi-year research projects, including joint archaeological excavations in Southeast Asia and collaborative conservation efforts with national museums across the Asian continent.

To celebrate this historic gift, the Department of Asian Art will host a major symposium next spring. The event will gather leading scholars, contemporary artists, and museum directors from around the world to discuss the future of Asian art history, the challenges of modern curation, and the evolving role of encyclopedic museums in the 21st century.
