The Met Expands Hours and Offers Free Admission on Friday Nights

In a major initiative to dramatically increase accessibility for all New Yorkers, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced a significant expansion of its operating hours. Beginning next month, the museum will remain open until 9:00 PM every Friday evening. Furthermore, admission for all visitors will be completely free from 5:00 PM to closing.

This new initiative, dubbed 'Met Fridays For All,' was developed in direct response to feedback from local community boards and working professionals who expressed difficulty visiting the museum during standard daytime hours. By eliminating financial barriers and extending hours into the evening, the museum hopes to welcome a vibrant new demographic of visitors who previously found the institution inaccessible.

The extended Friday evening hours will not simply be an opportunity to wander the galleries; they will be highly programmed cultural events. The museum has planned an extensive lineup of free, interactive programming, including live jazz performances in the Great Hall, pop-up poetry readings in the American Wing, and hands-on, bilingual art-making workshops tailored for all ages and skill levels.

To enhance the social atmosphere of 'Met Fridays For All,' the museum is significantly expanding its culinary offerings. Several new, casual dining pop-ups will be stationed throughout the museum, offering affordable, locally sourced street food and a curated selection of regional wines and craft beers, allowing visitors to dine and socialize while surrounded by world-class art.

This bold initiative is made possible by a generous, multi-year grant from a coalition of local philanthropic foundations dedicated to democratizing access to the arts. Museum leadership expressed profound gratitude for the funding, emphasizing that 'Met Fridays For All' is not a temporary promotion, but a permanent, structural change designed to fully integrate the museum into the dynamic nightlife and cultural fabric of New York City.
